109'b' (Tompkins-2, see below) R6+ Draped Bust half dollar, PCGS VG details, code 92 for cleaned. A very pleasing example of this popular, last-year-of-issue date. These are known for shallow obverse strikes, and this example is as expected in that sense. This variety is also well known for significant, advance die cracks, and this coin also meets that expectation. In fact, this is an example of the very rare 109'b', an unpublished, very late die state with'cuds' (die chips is really more like it) at the outer points of Stars 2 and 4.

The coin itself is quite nice and appealing, in spite of light cleaning ages ago. It has since retoned naturally in lovely golden gray, and is otherwise problem-free. There are a couple of new books on this series you should be aware of, and we can supply with copies of each. Steve Tompkins has produced a complete, ground-up re-write of Overton, entitled, "Early United States Half Dollars, Volume 1, 1794 - 1807". This is the first of a planned series of 3 or more volumes covering the entire lettered edge half dollar series, but it is the only one that is ready to go. The book is magnificent - over 500 pages, in full color, and with information galore that is not readily available elsewhere. Powers' work is not intended to take the place of Overton (or Tompkins), but is an adjunct to those books. Various shortcuts, tips and a bit of a different way of looking at attribution is what Powers does best.
